Call for Artists: Ravenswood Mural Project

The Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce and Special Service Area #31 are seeking proposals from artists for a mural on Damen Avenue. This new mural will be located adjacent to a “People Space” at the northeast corner of Damen and Leland where residents often unwind and enjoy a cup of coffee. The goal of this project is to enhance the connection between local artists and residents, showcase the creativity of our community, and encourage use of the Damen Leland People Space.

Project Background & Site Description

The Ravenswood neighborhood is known for its scenic tree-lined streets, vibrant arts community, and eclectic mix of independently owned shops and restaurants. In late 2020, the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce used feedback from residents to design and construct of a series of “People Spaces”- public gathering places for gathering and relaxation. Using funds from Special Service Area #31 for placemaking and neighborhood improvements, GRCC led a year’s-long project that led to the creation of five new People Spaces.

The People Space at Damen and Leland will feature multi-level seating, outdoor dining space, a shaded canopy, evergreen shrubs, and (soon!) a new mural.

Our new mural will be located on the south-facing wall of Foremost Cleaners (4701 N Damen Ave). For this project, the property owner of the adjacent building will install a plywood panel to their brick wall. We’re asking artists to create a mural directly on this plywood panel. The dimensions for this piece will be roughly 14′ wide x 9′ high.
