Celebrating Wellness Month in Ravenswood

This August, the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce is proud to spotlight ten inspiring local businesses that are redefining what wellness means in our community. From movement and mindfulness to healing and strength, these businesses represent the diverse and holistic ways Ravenswood residents are prioritizing their health. Each profile in this series offers a closer look at the people behind the businesses: their stories, their missions, and the powerful impact they’re making right here in our neighborhood.

Whether you’re a long-time wellness enthusiast or just starting to explore what health means for you, we invite you to get to know these incredible Ravenswood leaders and the spaces they’ve created to help us all feel more balanced, inside and out.

Ladies Who Lift

When Rae Reichlin founded Ladies Who Lift in 2017, it was more than just a fitness venture, it was a response to a need she saw again and again in the women she trained. As a personal trainer passionate about true strength training, Rae noticed a lack of spaces where women could confidently engage with barbell work and build real strength in a supportive, non-intimidating environment. What began as a few workshops quickly grew into a movement: from citywide pop-ups to a robust online training platform, and eventually into the brick-and-mortar space that now proudly calls Ravenswood home. While the mission has always been about empowering women through strength, the format has evolved to meet the growing and changing needs of the community.

Rooted in Ravenswood, Ladies Who Lift is a powerful example of what can happen when fitness meets intention. Rae speaks warmly of the neighborhood’s diversity and welcomes members from all walks of life, ages, and backgrounds who all show up to do the same thing: build strength and connect. With a team of like-minded, compassionate trainers, Rae has built a space where respect and humanity are foundational. Every trainer reads each client as an individual by meeting them where they are, with no assumptions. That kind of care has made Ladies Who Lift more than a gym, it’s a safe space for transformation, growth, and belonging.

When asked what advice she’d offer her Ravenswood neighbors about wellness, Rae is clear: it’s okay to start over. So many of her clients come in needing to unlearn what they’ve been taught about fitness, and Rae celebrates that process. “It’s worth it,” she says, “if you’re willing to strip away what’s familiar but not working.” As Ladies Who Lift continues to expand its class offerings and personal training availability, Rae’s message remains simple but powerful: show up, be open, and let strength meet you where you are. Whether you’re lifting a barbell for the first time or rediscovering your foundation, there’s space for you here.

The Hive

At its core, The Hive is more than just a dance studio, it’s a vibrant, welcoming space dedicated to making movement joyful and accessible for adults at every stage of their dance journey. Whether you’re reconnecting with childhood ballet roots or trying jazz for the first time, The Hive creates a fun, low-pressure environment where adults of all backgrounds and experience levels can feel empowered. Founded shortly after COVID, The Hive quickly grew into a beloved space in Ravenswood, offering not just physical activity, but connection, community, and confidence. From drop-in dance classes to new offerings like yoga, Zumba, and the signature “Burn at the Barre” series, the studio has become a go-to wellness hub for those seeking movement with meaning.

What makes The Hive especially unique in Ravenswood is the way it celebrates authenticity. Co-founder Jeff Wolfe describes the neighborhood as a “colorful, quirky mix,” and The Hive mirrors that energy by fostering a space where individuality is embraced and encouraged. Dancers are welcomed to make mistakes, try something new, and grow both physically and emotionally. The instructors here are trained not only in technique, but in how to teach with compassion and care. That sense of safety and self-expression is why The Hive has evolved beyond a studio—it’s a community, where friendships are forged, and vulnerability is celebrated.

In addition to their adult-focused classes at The Hive, the team also runs DANCE COLONY Studios, a youth dance center just down the street. There, the same values of inclusivity, discipline, and self-expression are instilled from an early age, offering young dancers the tools to grow as artists and as leaders. Whether it’s teaching kids to advocate for themselves or providing adults a space to reconnect with movement, The Hive’s mission is clear: wellness is holistic. It’s about honoring both body and mind, and creating space, literally and figuratively, for people to move through the world with more confidence, community, and joy.

Urban Athlete

Urban Athlete has been a fitness anchor in Ravenswood for over a decade, but with new owners Zac Lawhorn and Jonathan Rodriguez at the helm, the gym is entering a fresh and exciting chapter. Offering a unique blend of open gym access, personal training, and high-energy group classes, Urban Athlete stands out for its versatility and inclusivity. “We like to say we’re a little bit of everything,” says Jonathan. “You get the accessibility of a big box gym, the intensity of boutique fitness, and the personal attention of a training studio all under one roof.” With over 6,000 square feet of thoughtfully designed space including multiple training rooms, locker rooms with steam and showers, towel service, and specialized studios, Urban Athlete is equipped to meet people wherever they find themselves in their wellness journey.

Zac and Jonathan bring more than fitness credentials to the business as they also bring community connection. Both owners have deep ties to the North Side, with Jonathan returning to serve a neighborhood that helped shape him growing up. Zac, newer to Chicago, was drawn to Ravenswood’s unique mix of creativity, walkability, and local energy. They see Urban Athlete not just as a gym but as a wellness hub where people can build lifelong habits. “We want to be the place where someone’s wellness journey starts, but also the place that equips them to keep going even if life takes them somewhere else,” says Zac. “To us, that is success.”

This August and beyond, Urban Athlete is committed to keeping fitness engaging and accessible with a rotating schedule of strength, cardio, spin, and yoga classes along with exciting new formats like “Triple Sweat,” a high-intensity interval class designed by one of their talented coaches. They are also introducing seasonal challenges, community 5Ks like the Hot Chocolate Run, and planning a neighborhood-friendly take on the popular HYROX fitness competition. “We’re not here to reinvent the wheel,” Jonathan adds. “But we are here to keep it moving and to make sure our members feel challenged, supported, and welcomed, no matter their background or ability.” In a city where fitness can often feel exclusive or overwhelming, Urban Athlete is proudly doing things differently and building a stronger Ravenswood because of it.

Founded in 2018, Alchemy offers a dynamic blend of traditional therapy and performance coaching for individuals navigating high-pressure environments whether that’s on the field, on stage, in the courtroom, or in the operating room. Bodi Shak

Bodi Shak, founded by Antonio Coke, is not your typical gym. It’s a soulful, intentionally curated wellness space where every detail is rooted in inclusivity, culture, and community. Located in between Ravenswood and Uptown, Bodi Shak offers a wide array of group fitness classes including strength training, yoga, boxing, cycling, and dance, reflecting Antonio’s belief that movement should be joyful, accessible, and personalized. Inspired by his own journey through fitness and identity, Antonio envisioned a space that would welcome people of all backgrounds, body types, and experience levels that doesn’t just promote physical health, but emotional connection and cultural celebration.

At Bodi Shak, wellness isn’t just about breaking a sweat, it’s about healing, grounding, and belonging. Antonio shares that his guiding principle has always been to create an environment where someone like his own mother would feel not only welcome, but honored. That intention shows up everywhere: in the lush plants named for the women who helped raise him, in the vibrant wall of love created by renowned artist BOJITT, and in the daily rituals that start each class with gratitude and shared positivity. “People bring everything they’re carrying into the room,” Antonio explains. “It’s my responsibility to help them leave feeling lighter.”

What makes Bodi Shak truly special is Antonio’s ability to merge his passions (design, storytelling, movement, and care) into a living, breathing experience. The studio has expanded over the years, both in space and in spirit, and continues to evolve with offerings like Thrive, a new class designed to calm the mind while strengthening the body. For Antonio, wellness is the pursuit of a calm mind and everything he’s built encourages that journey. Now approaching eight years in operation, Bodi Shak stands as a love letter to resilience, creativity, and community wellness in the neighborhood.

The Attractivators

The Attractivators, located on the Wilson corridor in Ravenswood, has been redefining what a hair salon can feel like for nearly a decade. Founded by Anna Volkmann and Valerie Isotalo, two passionate stylists who began their journey as colleagues and quickly became trusted collaborators. The Attractivators prioritize exceptional service, inclusivity, and a deep respect for their clients. Whether you’re coming in for a fresh cut, color, or one of their new treatment options, this is a space where everyone is meant to feel like they belong. Clients often refer to the salon as their “third home,” a testament to the warm, judgment-free atmosphere cultivated by the team from day one.

Wellness at The Attractivators goes far beyond surface-level beauty. Anna and Val emphasize the importance of scalp health as a foundation for healthy hair, a topic they believe deserves more attention in the broader wellness conversation. Chicago’s harsh environmental factors like high pollution and seasonal humidity take a toll on our hair, and the salon’s newly expanded treatment menu offers clients tailored solutions with a self-care focus. Treatments now include head massages, hot towels, and moments of quiet relaxation, a much-needed mental reset in today’s fast-paced world. It’s all part of their mission to provide not just great hair, but a restorative experience.

What truly sets The Attractivators apart is their deep investment in education and community. Their rigorous apprentice program, described by the owners as a “college and master’s program for hair”, ensures that each stylist is thoroughly trained to meet the needs of every client with precision and care. This passion for skill-building and individuality in styling reflects a larger value: honoring the uniqueness of each person who walks through their door. As Ravenswood locals themselves, Anna and Val cherish their neighborhood’s support, especially during challenging times like the pandemic. Whether it’s the neighbor popping in for dog treats or a regular client coming for a wellness pick-me-up, The Attractivators has become a beloved fixture in the community: one rooted in kindness, connection, and confident hair.

Feast Fitness

Feast Fitness is a vibrant community gym located right here in Ravenswood, and we recently sat down with General Manager and Fitness Coach Sarah Gonsiorowski and Head Coach Anna Stuck. At its core, Feast Fitness is about building people up to be fitter for life. Their mission goes beyond workouts as they empower members to gain strength and confidence that positively impacts daily living outside the gym. With a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, Feast strives to create a space where everyone feels happy, supported, and motivated to achieve their personal best.

Wellness in Ravenswood is a shared value that Sarah and Anna see reflected strongly in their community. Members often attend the same classes and form friendships through the support and camaraderie found at Feast. The gym’s culture centers on gratitude, humility, and grit, fostering an environment where people cheer each other on and push through challenges together. Beyond fitness, Feast also invests in community well-being through charity events, creative programming, and educational seminars on nutrition and lifestyle habits. Co-owner Greg Robbins provides on-site nutritional consultations, helping members fuel their bodies for long-term success. In addition, Feast has a physical therapist available on site to support recovery and injury prevention. Their dedication extends to creating lifelong relationships and a sense of belonging for all who walk through their doors.

Sarah and Anna emphasize wellness as more than physical activity; it includes rest, recovery, mental health, and balance. The supportive community atmosphere ensures that fitness is not just a routine but a shared experience that uplifts everyone. Upcoming events like the Rumble on Ravenswood competition this September highlight their inclusive spirit, offering fun and friendly opportunities for all fitness levels to compete and celebrate together.

Muscle & Joint Physical Therapy

Located at the intersection of Clark and Sunnyside, Muscle & Joint Physical Therapy brings cutting-edge care and a community-focused spirit to Ravenswood. Family-owned and operated by Dr. Matthew and Michelle Johnson, the clinic recently celebrated five years in business and one exciting year in their new Ravenswood location. Their practice offers a welcoming, individualized approach to physical therapy, emphasizing patient relationships and long-term wellness. Unlike many corporate healthcare settings, decisions here are made locally, by the people who actually know and treat the patients. “Every person who walks in the door is more than just a case file,” says Matthew. “They’re a neighbor.”

What sets Muscle & Joint apart is their innovative use of diagnostic tools rarely found in outpatient clinics. As the only physical therapy provider in Chicago offering both musculoskeletal ultrasound and electromyography (EMG) testing in-house, they’re redefining how patients receive care. These diagnostic tools provide precise insights into muscle and nerve health—critical for developing targeted treatment plans that work. They also specialize in dry needling, a powerful technique for releasing muscle tension and alleviating chronic pain. Whether you’re dealing with an athletic injury, desk-job fatigue, or prepping for your next marathon or HYROX event, this clinic is equipped to help you recover smarter and move better.

Beyond their advanced offerings, Michelle and Matthew are passionate about shifting public understanding of physical therapy. Many people still assume PT is only for post-surgical or traumatic injury recovery. In truth, most of their patients come in for everyday issues like back pain, joint stiffness, or athletic overuse and no doctor referral is required for most insurance plans. As active participants in neighborhood events like the Ravenswood Run, they’ve embraced their role as both healthcare providers and community partners. “Our goal is to help people stay active, avoid unnecessary procedures, and feel empowered in their bodies,” Michelle says. “Wellness is personal, and we’re proud to be a trusted resource for the people of Ravenswood.”

Smooth House Laser

Tucked into the heart of the Ravenswood corridor, Smooth House Laser is a boutique laser spa redefining self-care through education, personalization, and a deeply human touch. While founder Vanessa Duarte often uses the term “medspa,” Smooth House is technically classified as a laser spa as many of its treatments target the dermis, the skin’s regenerative layer, placing it in the medical category. Despite this, the experience remains warm, personalized, and boutique in feel. Specializing in non-invasive laser treatments for fat reduction and skin tightening, along with hydrafacials, classic facials, and skincare consultations, Vanessa offers one-on-one, concierge-style care from consultation to follow-up.

Smooth House’s mission goes beyond aesthetics, it’s about empowerment through education. Vanessa helps clients understand their skin type, tone, and sensitivities so they can make confident, informed choices. Whether she’s demystifying laser treatments or creating custom skincare regimens, her approach is all about building trust and clarity. One service often overlooked is microneedling: commonly known for skin tightening, it’s also used at Smooth House to treat rosacea, sunspots, scars, texture, post-acne marks, and even support hair regrowth.

In just two years, Smooth House has made a name for itself in the Ravenswood community, building a loyal clientele and connecting with neighbors through the Chamber. Clients love the popular Facial Fridays offering: affordable, 30-45 minute custom facials paired with product education and maintenance tips. Looking ahead, Vanessa plans to debut a handcrafted resin “hands” display to showcase her curated skincare line. “I want people to come in, feel relaxed, and leave feeling like the best version of themselves,” she says.
