The first time I visited Bon Femmes, I knew I’d be back–and soon. That’s the sort of place this is: bright, welcoming, bound to make you say “where have you been all my life?”

Seasonal selections glitter in the sunlight: a colorful catalogue of unique apparel, home accents, beauty products, and more. Better still: everything in stock comes from woman-owned brands! This was always the plan for owner Omotola Akinbiyi, who describes Bon Femmes as “a happy space celebrating women, their beautiful designs and the good stuff in life!”

This is an especially good spot for gifting, so if you’re still knee-deep in the holiday shopping trenches, we couldn’t recommend Bon Femmes enough.

Done shopping? Bon Femmes frequently hosts gatherings like book swaps and workshops, making it a great space to connect with your community and get in touch with your creative side. Visit Bon Femmes’ website and Instagram page for more!

Tell us a bit about the story behind Bon Femmes. How did it come to be?

Omotola: Bon Femmes started as my love letter to women artists and makers. I’ve always been someone who makes things, so creating a space that celebrates creativity felt natural. What began as a small online shop grew into a brick-and-mortar space where people can find thoughtful, beautifully designed pieces from women-owned brands.

What can people expect to find at Bon Femmes?

Omotola: At Bon Femmes, you’ll find a curated mix of art prints, stationery, jewelry, accessories, home décor, and beauty goods, all from women-owned brands.

What are some of your favorite items in the store right now?

Omotola: That’s like picking a favorite child, I simply can’t! I love everything!

What do you love most about having a business in Ravenswood?

Omotola: What I love most about having a business in Ravenswood is the sense of community. You really feel it here. People are curious, supportive, and genuinely excited about small businesses. It’s the kind of neighborhood where customers turn into regulars and regulars turn into friends.

What’s next for you? Let us in on some of the things you’re excited about in the coming months!

Omotola: I’m in the very early stages of working on something new within the neighborhood. I shall share more soon hehe.

What is your favorite neighborhood event and why?

Omotola: Ravenswood ArtWalk, we get to see the best of the best artists in Chicago! It’s also so cool getting to see various artists’ studios.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Chicago?

Omotola: The weather! Lol jk jk, I love EVERYTHING about this dang city, especially the people. We’re f***ing great!

What song(s) have you been listening to on repeat lately?

Omotola: Kate Bush, Wuthering Heights. This has nothing to do with the upcoming movie, I just really love this song haha.

What’s the last amazing book you read?

Omotola: My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris. A stunning graphic novel written and illustrated by a Chicago local.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!

Omotola: Two! My gorgeous black cat Celene, whom I refer to as my queen of darkness. She’s basically me in a cat; friendly but soooo suspicious of everyone hahaha. And my stunning terrier mix, Charlie. She’s the sweetest lil grumpy grandma baby! 0 potential of becoming a shop dog because she’s gets into guard dog mode when she enters the shop. And Celene is a flight risk in the shop hahah.

How has GRCC membership been helpful for Bon Femmes?

Omotola: GRCC has been such a huge help for Bon Femmes. Whenever something comes up in the business world that I don’t quite understand, I know I can turn to them for guidance. When I’m looking for ways to connect with other local business owners, they’re my go-to. And whenever I have an idea for an event, I can always count on GRCC to help spread the word. They’re truly the best!
