The Flower Girl Company

Weddings. Anniversaries. Heartfelt celebrations. Every now and again, something spectacular is going to happen in your life, and you’re going to want to pair it with a special floral arrangement to match.

Enter The Flower Girl Company, located on Montrose Ave, where owner and lead designer Kate Masiak uses her creative skills and botanical know-how to craft bespoke bouquets, centerpieces, and more.

Since 2016, The Flower Girl Company has designed flowers for over 350 weddings and has earned its way into The Knot‘s Wedding Hall of Fame. There’s a reason for this popularity: in addition to their local charm (Chicago loves local!), The Flower Girl Company works collaboratively with clients to create arrangements that feel personal, fun, and–yes–positively magical. You can learn more on The Flower Girl Company’s website or check out their Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest page for more floral adventures!

Tell us about the story behind The Flower Girl Company. How did it come to be?

Kate: The Flower Girl Company is a wedding and event floral design studio. It grew out of a lifelong love of creativity and design. After spending years as a youth theatre educator, stage manager and corporate office manager I decided to take the leap into working for myself and doing something I loved. In 2016 I was lucky to have friends who were the marrying age and trusted me with their floral design helping the business grow into what it is today.

What’s it like to be a florist? Tell us about your creative process.

Kate: Being a florist is equal parts creative, physical, and emotional – in the best way. Mainly, I love to listen to my clients and what they love about flowers. Each design is customized to their personalities and desires. I love to have a collaborative process so the client feels involved in the overall look and feel of their wedding.

What would you say to someone who wants to book your services but doesn’t know where to start?

Kate: That’s totally okay, most people don’t! I always tell clients that my job is to guide them. You don’t need to know flower names or have a fully formed vision. We’ll start with how you want things to feel, and I’ll take it from there. The only requirements when you reach out is to have a set date and location for your event. Just fill out the contact form on my website!

What do you love most about having a business in Ravenswood?

Kate: Ravenswood feels like a true community. People care about supporting local, showing up for one another, and building something. I love how many small locally owned businesses line the streets. Spending money in the neighborhood feels like a contribution to the families and area.

What do you wish more people knew about your business? Any quirks or fun facts?

Kate: Like many small business owners, wearing all the hats can be a challenge, balancing creativity with logistics, admin, and growth. But it’s also what makes the work rewarding. I truly have my hands in everything. If you work with The Flower Girl Company I am the person emailing you, meeting with you, designing your florals and delivering and setting up on your wedding day. It’s an extremely personal vendor relationship.

Do you have favorite kinds of arrangements or flowers?

Kate: My favorite flowers are ranunculus! I wish carnations didn’t get such a bad reputation. They come in so many colors and are extremely durable. I also love the large petal pattern of a garden rose.

Spotlight another local business! What are your favorite spots in Ravenswood?

Kate: The tuna salad sandwich at First Slice can’t be beat and I’m always buying gifts at Hazel. Oh, and let’s not forget the sidewinder fries at Wolcott Tap

What is your favorite neighborhood event and why?

Kate: Anything farmer’s market or artist’s market

What’s your favorite thing about living in Chicago?

Kate: I truly love the seasons. I grew up in Florida where it was either hot or hotter. I feel like Chicago truly celebrates every season and Ravenswood is great at decorating each part of the year.

What song(s) have you been listening to on repeat lately?

Kate: I’ll be honest, I mostly listen to jazz from the 1950’s.

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?

Kate: Iced coffee, anytime of year, even if it’s zero degrees out.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!

Kate: If you’re near my studio you’ve probably seen Lily! She is a 1 year old black goldendoodle and an absolute joy. She’s full of puppy energy and loves Montrose Dog Beach.

How has GRCC membership been helpful for your business?

Kate: It’s been a great way to connect with the community and other business owners. Sometimes owning a business can be isolating and lonely so joining a group like GRCC can be really helpful.

What’s your vision for the future of Ravenswood?

Kate: Less empty storefronts and more small businesses. I think that’s a pretty standard goal in the neighborhood.
