Each month, the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce spotlights a different business from our neighborhood. This month we get to know Christin Rose, owner of Savvy Seconds and 1st’s on Lawrence Avenue.
Can you tell us a little about your shop and what you offer?
I am a resale clothing boutique that focuses on fashion geared toward women -but not exclusively- and to others interested in funky garb. I carry mostly modern style, quality merchandise but lately have been focusing more on expanding my authentic vintage selection which consists of items from the 50s-90s. I specialize in bold prints and highly suggest that you should have fun with fashion. What I do is thrift on Mondays, the day I’m closed, wash everything and have it all tagged, steamed, and out on the floor on Tuesday. Gotta keep inventory fresh for all my regulars!
How long have you been in the neighborhood?
I’ve been in Ravenswood for about two and a half years now.
What can I find at Savvy that I can’t find anywhere else?
One thing my shop has that no there’s have is my Oliver Alfred! He’s my sweet and handsome beabull pup who keeps me company at the shop.
Do you have a favorite item at your shop?
My favorite pieces I’d have to say are my exquisite house dresses from the 1950s. Back then, everything was beautifully handmade, using bright colorful quality fabrics and decadent details throughout, down to the buttons. They’re absolute pieces of art!
What’s the biggest challenge in running your business?
One thing I struggle with is being a one woman operation. My lists of things to do seems never ending and making all the decisions can be very overwhelming for me, especially being a Libra.
What about Savvy Seconds are you most proud of?
The thing I’m most proud of within my business is my clientele and the special relationships I have developed with them. I, as well as customers of mine, have met some dear friends via the shop. I’ve been told that it’s an inviting atmosphere, kinda like Cheers, where persons go to relieve stress by playing dress-up and talking out problems of love and life with other like minded persons.
What’s something people find surprising about you or your shop?
One thing people are often shocked to hear is that I’ve been open for 10 years. People think I’m younger than I look. I thank my parents for my genes. Insert winky face.
In what ways are you involved with the Ravenswood community?
I’m a firm believer in makin’ a little and givin’ a little. I host special events where a percentage of sales is donated to local charities like neighborhood school groups and organizations. For my most recent Valentine’s event, a portion of sales went towards the Chicago Women’s Health Center.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was a child, and even still today, I dreamed of being a singer or entertainer. I have many videos from childhood of me dressed in crazy ensembles, with a mic in my hand, on counter tops, singin’ and dancin’ away. In grade school I would teach friends my choreographed creations and we’d perform for parents and neighbors!
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
My number one go-to karaoke song is “You Know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse. Karaoke is my therapy.
